Apple Marks Major Environmental Milestone Ahead of Earth Day

Company surpasses 60% reduction in global emissions, expands clean energy and recycled materials use

As Earth Day approaches, Apple has announced it has reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by over 60% since 2015—an important step toward its Apple 2030 goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its entire business.

This milestone, highlighted in Apple’s 2024 Environmental Progress Report, reflects significant strides in clean energy, sustainable product design, and responsible resource use. The report also shares Apple’s ongoing efforts to encourage device recycling, with a limited-time offer available in Apple Stores through May 16.

“We’re proud of the progress we’re making toward Apple 2030,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s VP of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. “We’re using more clean energy and recycled materials than ever, reducing waste and water usage globally, and investing in nature-based solutions. The closer we get to 2030, the more ambitious we become.”

Key Highlights from Apple’s 2024 Environmental Progress Report:

🌞 Clean Energy Expansion

Apple’s supply chain now uses 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity—helping avoid 21.8 million metric tons of carbon emissions in 2024 alone. Energy efficiency improvements with suppliers cut nearly 2 million additional metric tons.

💻 Greener Products

Apple is leading the industry in recycled materials:

  • 99% recycled rare earth elements in all product magnets.
  • 99% recycled cobalt in Apple-designed batteries.
  • The new MacBook Air contains over 55% recycled content, the highest ever in an Apple product.

🧪 Cleaner Manufacturing

Apple is reducing potent fluorinated gas emissions from semiconductor and display production. So far, 26 semiconductor and all display suppliers have pledged to cut these emissions by 90% by 2030—abating 8.4 million metric tons in 2024.

🚯 Waste Reduction

Through its Zero Waste Program, Apple and its suppliers diverted 600,000 metric tons of waste from landfills last year—totaling 3.6 million tons since 2015. Innovations like reusable packaging and metals recovery are accelerating these efforts.

💧 Water Conservation

Apple and its suppliers have saved more than 90 billion gallons of freshwater since 2013. In 2024 alone, 14 billion gallons were saved, and long-term projects are underway to replenish 100% of water withdrawals in high-stress regions by 2030.
