Biodegradable Microrobots Could Revolutionize Drug Delivery

Scientists at ETH Zurich have developed microscopic robots made entirely from biodegradable materials that can navigate through bodily fluids. These tiny machines, measuring less than the width of a human hair, use magnetic fields for propulsion and can carry medicine directly to specific sites in the body. Initial tests show they can navigate complex vascular networks with precision. “The breakthrough here is combining targeted delivery with complete biodegradability,” says lead researcher Dr. Petra Müller. The technology could potentially transform treatment for cancer and other diseases by dramatically reducing side effects associated with systemic drug administration.
